Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will feature horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is and would like to be in a future spotlight, please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com
What is your first memory of watching a horror movie the 13th movie?
I honestly didn’t watch Friday the 13th movies until later on. I always watched the Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise. I will always continue to be a Freddy Krueger fan.
What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
My all time favorite is Freddy VS Jason; again because I’ve always been a Freddy Krueger fan. If it’s just a Friday the 13th film, then Friday the 13th Final Chapter is my favorite. Ted White was a great Jason.
What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.? If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
I didn’t get into cosplaying until a few years ago after me and my husband (@thedarkshape_78) moved to SoCal. He influenced me to do cosplay at first to show my support for him. I decided to do it to but now we both do it for enjoyment and are always supporting one another.
I wanted to do something colorful and saw NES Jason from the video game and loved everything about it and the rest is history. I have a few custom masks made by @horrorfxdesigns and @AlwaysFridayCustoms. @Horrorfxdesigns also did a custom axe for me. Some of my costume was purchased online from Amazon as well. Recently I had a very close friend (@PunisherFromHell) that I met at DarkSide Riverside, (a horror con that we had attended a few years ago) specially hand dye me a pair of purple coveralls.
How many versions of Jason costumes do you have? Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
I have two variations I do of NES Retro Jason so far. I plan to have a few more in the future. It’s a work in progress.
Do you attend conventions? If so which ones do you attend? Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended? What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
So far I have only attended DarkSide Riverside and any local events by Spooksiebooevents, which are family based. I plan to go to Monsterpalooza and Texas Frightmare when they are available again.
To a new cosplayer, I’d recommend going to a local event at first. Don’t be afraid to dress up and be interactive. Don’t take criticism to much to heart. Be passionate about it and OWN IT! Everyone has to start somewhere! I recommend a social media account for cosplay if you are wanting to get your name out there and grow as a cosplayer as well. Most importantly have fun, that’s what it’s all about!
What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
To a first timer, you have to start somewhere. Don’t take criticism to much to heart, start up a social media page and get your name out there. Be passionate and confident in your costume. OWN IT! Keep the supporters you have genuine; dont be afraid to reach out for opinions or advice on your cosplay. Remember we are here to have fun that’s what it’s all about.
What has been your best experience as a cosplayer?
Some of the best experiences is having a kiddo come up to me and ask for a picture. That is the most heartwarming feeling! Not only am I enjoying to wear my cosplay but someone else noticing and wanting a picture is the best feeling. To see the kids smile makes my day when at an event or Con.
Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
Since starting to be a cosplayer and part of the horror community, I have met some pretty rad people. People that have supported me since the beginning. Some that have custom made part of my cosplays and some that I look up to as goals for where I want my cosplay to go. You can find them all on Instagram:
Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
