Confessions of a Cosplayer: Marcus Casiano

Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have other horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is a horror cosplayer and would like to be featured in a future spotlight, please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com

What is your first memory of watching a horror movie?  What movie was it?
My first ever horror movie I remember watching was Jason X. I absolutely LOVED the insanity and over the top sci-fi/gore that made Jason X stand out to me as more of an action movie as a kid. As I was horrified of slasher characters like Jason, Michael and Freddy, the other big horror film that I was scared of was Killer Clowns From Outer Space. I’m still a bit cautious of clowns because of it! I didn’t really get into many other horror films until around 2016 when I started binge watching series like The Evil Dead, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw and Nightmare on Elm Street. Now I have a love for all manner of horror.

You have a love for cosplaying all horror franchises.  Since you cosplay as multiple horror icons, what movie out of each franchise is your favorite and why?
Oh jeez. I have a pretty solid bit of favorites in each of the core horror franchises . My favorite Friday the 13th film has got to be Jason X, just due to Uber Jason’s design alone and my childhood memories of the film. I even dressed up as Uber Jason for Halloween one year as a child! Army of Darkness stands out to me on the Evil Dead front as it’s really peak Bruce Campbell’s campiness (besides the Stars show), Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 has got to be my favorite iteration of Leatherface and Bill Moseley as Chop Top completely sealed the deal for my love of the film (next to the first film). Finally, the original Halloween and the 2018 sequel are two of my favorite pairings in the Halloween franchise with Halloween 2 and 3 also holding special spots for me.

Do you have any original cosplay concepts?  If so, what inspired them?
The only original concept cosplay I’ve done was an Army of Darkness film/Ash vs the Evil Dead show mashup costume that I did back in December of 2016 as a last minute cosplay to an event however I do have plenty of plans for completely original concept cosplays that I want to eventually do over the years. I HAVE cosplayed as some pretty obscure versions of a couple of horror characters (Dead by Daylight variants of Ash and Ghostface specifically!)

What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, masks, chainsaws, etc.?  If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
I first started cosplaying back in 2013 as a one time convention run at Megacon down in Florida (I was only 16 at the time!) . I cosplayed as the 10th Doctor Who and from there I fully immersed myself in the hobby. After that I ventured more into anime and video game cosplays. My first ever horror cosplay was my mashup film/show Ash cosplay back in 2016. From there I worked on revamping most of my Ash cosplay up until late 2017 when Halloween 2018 was revealed. I started working on my 2018 Michael cosplay! I typically work with my girlfriend on all of my cosplay. She handles clothing alterations, sewing and makeup. I handle props, sourcing, ideas and obviously wearing the cosplay.

How many versions of Jason, Michael and Leatherface costumes do you have?  Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
As of right now, I’ve cosplayed 2018 Michael, TCM2 Leatherface, Dead by Daylight “Devilface” Ghostface and about 3 different versions of Ash (Army of Darkness, Ash vs the Evil Dead and Dead by Daylight). I currently have an Uber Jason cosplay in the works and will eventually be doing Vs. Jason and opening Jason X as well! I also really want to cosplay as Super Freddy from a Nightmare on Elm Street 5 and the New Nightmare Freddy demon as well.

Do you attend conventions?  If so which ones do you attend?  Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended?  What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
I attend all manner of conventions from anime and comic conventions to gaming focused ones and eSports conventions. I’ve also recently taken a liking to horror based conventions like Spooky Empire and Chicago Flashback Weekend! I’d HIGHLY recommend Spooky Empire as an amazing horror themed convention down here in Florida, truly an amazing con! If I had to give any advice to those who are looking to cosplay at an event for the first time – be yourself, let your nerdflag fly and don’t be afraid to be in character if you’re a horror character, people LOVE it! Don’t be shy – if you see other cosplayers that you love, go up to them if they don’t look busy and say hi! Take photos and have a blast, and meet as many celebs as you can afford to meet!

What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
Honestly, don’t be shy. People are gonna love your costume even if it isn’t as crazy detailed as other cosplayers. Don’t be too worried about if others look better than you or not; we’re all weirdos in costumes looking to have a good time!

Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
A few of my favorite cosplayers in the horror community are @SouthJerseyJason (of course haha), @Travis Jason13, @JonnyRuckus, @BethyGhoulCosplay, @CBStudiosCosplay and all of the amazing folks over at the Knights of Sumeria Evil Dead builders group on Facebook. Those guys are groovy as hell and I wouldn’t be here today without most of them! Also, massive shout out to
@ModeratelyOkayCosplay as well. He’s a great guy and has helped me a ton in the past with stuff!

Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
I sure do! Most of my cosplay content can be found over on Twitter (https://twitter.com/the_onlySHAPE, IG -@theonly_SHAPE) I also stream horror games (sometimes in cosplay!) on my Twitch channel!(https://www.twitch.tv/theonlyshape) Thanks so much again for the questions, and stay groovy everybody!
