Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is a horror cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com
I met Brett at my first event of the year which was on Friday the 13th in March at Level Up Entertainment in Mays Landing, NJ. It is such a great feeling meeting the individuals who follow my page and come out and support me. He was dressed in his FvJvA Jason costume and he looked great!
What is your first memory of watching a horror movie? What movie was it?
I was 5. It was at the Drive in. I remember just being totally sucked in on the edge of my seat anticipating what was going to happen next and the movie was Phantasm.
You have a love for cosplaying all things horror. What inspired you to do original characters rather than a character from a horror franchise?
I like coming up with my own characters and backgrounds. I let my creativity just go nuts!
What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask, etc.? If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
I’ve always loved Halloween and went one step further but really got into it in my 20’s when I had some money to purchase materials and such. I was doing this long before the term cosplay was used. As far as my costumes I, buy pieces, distress my own clothing and sometimes employ usual methods. I once used a paint marker to get the right color for my hood.
Can you describe some of your original creations and were you came up with the concept.
Apocalypse Bob is inspired by the Mad Max movies . My version of Jason is from a comic Jason vs Freddy vs Ash and the Boogy Man I thought was just creepy.
Do you attend conventions? If so which ones do you attend? Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended? What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
I have attended some in the past few years- Monster Mania and Chiller Theater.
NJ HorrorCon is a new con that is becoming a favorite of mine. My advice would be to just take it all in at your own pace. It can be very overwhelming.
What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
Have fun with your cosplay and dont be afraid to do your own thing!
Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
South Jersey Jason ,Mike McManis and Kristine Knowlton.
Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
No, I would like to get more involved with social media. Right now I do it for the love of horror /Halloween.
