Welcome to Crystal Lake

Confessions of a Cosplayer: Nathan Barker

Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is a horror cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com

I first heard of Nathan when I came across Camp Blood Radio (formally known as Return to Camp Blood) on Stitcher about a year ago. The Podcast had been on for many years and Nathan did not take over full time hosting and producing duties until mid 2016. I had reached out to him just as I was getting into the Cosplay game and he was kind enough to give me tips on cosplaying at cons and what mask makers he recommended. In September of 2019 our lives would forever be intertwined and a friendship would start. Nathan reached out to me and asked if I would like to be on an episode to talk about my cosplay and share other events that I partook in. Since then, we formed a friendship and I hope to run into him one day at a con and share a backpack beer with him.

What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie?
I don’t really have a specific memory of first watching a Friday the 13th film.  As a young kid in the 80’s, I just remember them being all over the video stores and seeing the posters and advertisements before I really knew what the franchise was.

What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
My favorite Friday the 13th film is Part 6: Jason Lives.  I enjoy the comedy horror aspect and you get to see a lot of Jason in the film with 18 kills.  Part 6 also features one of my favorite characters and favorite Tommy Jarvis, Thom Matthews.

What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.?  If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
I first started cosplaying at 32 years old back in 2014.  I first wore one of my costumes in the summer of 2014 in a promotional photo shoot for the first Jason Voorhees actor, Ari Lehman and his band First Jason.  Soon after that photo shoot, I played Jason in the music video for “Heed My Warning”.  After the video, I began traveling around with Ari and First Jason from time to time and wore the costume while the band played at shows and took pictures with fans.  That still continues to this day and I have played Jason in 3 music videos for First Jason that you can find on YouTube.  I have purchased some of my costume items from Kyle Huculak (hood), John Jarrell at Frighteous FX (clothing), Tim Miller at DirtknapFX (prop weapons), Tim Schultz at Cryptkeeper9 Productions (hockey masks), just to name a few.

How many versions of Jason costumes do you have?  Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
Currently, I have a Part 6 and a VS costume and will likely add a Part 3 costume in the future.

Do you attend conventions?  If so which ones do you attend?  Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended?  What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
I attend conventions all over the country, especially in the Midwest.  I have attended numerous conventions in my travels with First Jason, as well as on my own time.  I recommend any of the Days of the Dead, Horrorhound and Monster Mania as far as the bigger name shows go.  As far as advice for someone who has never attended a convention; try to be aware of your surroundings as much as possible. While in costume it can be difficult to see and with large crowds and narrow paths, it can be difficult to navigate around the convention.

What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
Don’t worry about the haters, everyone had to start somewhere.

Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
Jason Baker @sdcostumeguy , Joe Gallow @13gallowslane ,
That Emenbator guy @SouthJerseyJasn and Steven Evans

Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
Facebook @nathanbarker82 @campbloodradio and @DeathCurseDesigns and Instagram @nathan_barker_f13  @campb_blood_radio and @DeathCurseDesigns
